Another “Hit the Road and Go” adventure in Italy. We just rent a car and go… This was an eight-day loop through central Italy, starting and ending near Rome. The route traces the Tuscan coast and hill towns, crosses to the Cinque Terre for a day of boat-hopping between cliffside villages, cuts back through Tuscany and Umbria, follows the Adriatic coast south, and finishes with a run through Teramo to meet Vito’s long-time friend Anton Roolaardt, who was performing with his band at the MoonJune Music Festival. Then we returned home with Anton, with a quick stop at Tivoli, and then back home to Ostia. In total, the trip covered about 1,415 km by car across 8 days, plus a full day on the water along the Ligurian coast at Cinque Terre, where we traveled by boat to visit different towns, including Porto Venere.
It was, overall, an exhilarating adventure that we will never forget, and one that we have tried to capture here to share with family and friends. Needless to say, we only scratched the surface in visiting these places; each one of them warranted a multi-day stay to truly capture and experience. Many places we visited that were really outstanding, such as “Colle D’Elsa”, were not full of tourists at all and still wonderful, yet others like San Gimignano (only a few kilometers away) were bustling with tourists. Overall, it was an amazing adventure and quite an unexpected accomplishment to see 23 places in 8 days with nothing planned at all. It will be hard to capture what we experienced—the emotion and the sense of total awe and discovery of such wondrous and exquisite beauty that you sense in visiting these places—however, here goes! (Please note that this recount is from my (Vito’s) recollection of things; hopefully, Cristina will provide her recollections as well soon.)
